But depending on the gym you train in, the coach might not let you spar other fighters for weeks or even months, and there’s a good reason for it.

You first have to learn the proper way to throw punches, move your feet, hit the heavy bag and mitts, hold your stance and such, in general, you have to know how the basic principles of boxing work before using them in a fight.

If you can’t find any information online on the quality of the gym, just sign up for a free class and analyze how the training goes – does the coach really seem to help you, be interested in explaining the most subtle details, or just makes it look like he wants to make money off you?

I would better drive a couple blocks further and actually learn the right way than be stranded at a place that ultimately doesn’t get me any better.

Talent isn’t always true

A lot of folks say that if you aren’t talented there’s no way you are getting any good. The statement can be true for those who want to become champions one day, but as long as you can tuck your hands behind the chin and be agile on your feet, you can definitely get good at boxing no matter how talented you are.

Speaking of champs, you have to realize that many fighters train from a very young age. That doesn’t always dictate whether or not you can become good or even a champion some day as there are examples of boxers who started to fight relatively late in their life, but more often then not your’e going to have a hard time catching up to those people.
